Before You Start
- Plan to collect your first morning urine sample.
- Limit fluid intake after 6:00 pm the night prior to collection.
- Prior to bed, empty your bladder. Upon waking, collect your urine prior to eating or drinking. Ensure that it has been at least 6 hours since you emptied your bladder.
- A diluted urine sample may be inadequate for sample analysis and may be rejected.
- Samples that are visibly contaminated with blood (red, pink, or brown in color) will be rejected.
Consult your healthcare provider before stopping any medications. Discontinuing supplements three days prior to specimen collection is recommended unless otherwise directed by your provider.
Samples must be shipped on Monday through Thursday (outside the US Monday or Tuesday). If you collect on the weekend, hold the specimen until Monday to ship.
Preparing for Your Test
A minimum of 10 mL of urine is required for each test ordered.
Important: Do not discontinue any medications or supplements without first consulting your healthcare practitioner.
Test Requirements
| Test | Requirements |
|---|---|
| Porphyrins |
The following drugs may interfere with the Porphyrins test and should be discontinued 72 hours before collection: acriflavine, ciprofloxacin (Cipro), ethoxazene (Serenium), nalidixic acid (NegGram), norfloxacin (Norproxin), ofloxacin (Floxin), oxytetracycline (Terramycin), phenazopyridine (Prodium, Pyridium, Urobiotic), sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra), tetracycline (Achromycin). After Collection: Immediately pour urine from the collection cup into the amber vials due to light sensitivity. Secure the lid. Tighten the lid on the collection cup (should contain a minimum of 10 mL). Freeze both the cup and vial for at least 4 hours or until frozen (14 days maximum). Ship with a frozen gel pack. |
| Kryptopyrrole |
If this is your first time testing for pyrroles, discontinue vitamin B6 and zinc one week prior to collection. If you are currently under treatment for pyrroluria, continue taking vitamin B6 and zinc. After Collection: Pour urine into the amber vial with ascorbic acid additive labeled “Kryptopyrrole.” Tighten the lid securely. Invert the vial 10 times. Immediately freeze until ready to ship. Ship with a frozen gel pack. |
Let’s Get Started
- Complete the information on the barcode sticker and the specimen containers by writing the patient name, date of birth, and collection date. Disregard “Medical Records Number.” Place the barcode sticker on the specimen containers, ensuring the information is visible. Use blue or black ink from a ball-point pen—do not use felt-tipped pens or dry-erase markers. Unlabeled samples will be rejected.
- Collect a first morning urine specimen and follow the storage instructions outlined in the table above.
Preparing the Package
- Ensure the frozen specimen(s) are labeled and tightly sealed. Check the box on each to confirm it has been frozen.
- Place the frozen specimen cup, vial(s), and absorbent packing sheet into the biohazard zip-lock bag and seal.
- Place the sealed biohazard bag and the frozen ice pack into the silver thermo bag and seal.
- Place the filled silver thermo bag into the test kit box and close the lid.
Locate the shipping instruction card for details on how to ship.
