Glyphosate is the world’s most widely used herbicide and the primary toxic chemical Roundup™ which is utilized by homeowners, municipalities, and farmers to prevent the growth of weeds and grasses. Studies have linked glyphosate exposure to chronic conditions and various types of cancer, such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma, renal tubule carcinoma, pancreatic islet-cell adenoma, and skin tumors. Glyphosate is also known to disrupt the balance of gut bacteria, reducing the ratio of beneficial to harmful bacteria.

MosaicDX’s Glyphosate Test is a urine-based assay that assess an individual’s exposure to glyphosate. Additionally, MosaicDX offers testing of water samples to assist in identifying an important potential source of glyphosate exposure from contaminated drinking water.

There is a strong correlation between glyphosate usage and several chronic illnesses. While correlations do not necessarily imply causation, these findings do raise concerns about the widespread use of a chemical that affects all life on earth.

Why Test for Glyphosate Toxicity?

The main ingredient in herbicides is glyphosate, a molecule that prevents plants from making proteins, so they die. Glyphosate kills the broadleaf weeds and grasses that compete with crops. More than five billion pounds is sprayed worldwide, which ends up in our air, water, and soil.

Glyphosate can enter the body by direct absorption through the skin, by eating foods treated with glyphosate, or by drinking water contaminated with glyphosate. According to a 2022 CDC study, glyphosate is in 75% of rainfall, 75% of air, and 80% of Americans. The level of glyphosate in our system has grown from trace levels in Europeans to 1.75 milligrams per kilogram of body weight in Americans.

Assessment of glyphosate exposure is critical in understanding total toxic body burden. There is a strong correlation between glyphosate usage and several chronic illnesses. While correlations do not necessarily imply causation, these findings do raise concerns about the widespread use of a chemical that affects all life on earth. In March 2015, IARC classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2A). IARC also concluded that there was “strong” evidence for genotoxicity, both for “pure” glyphosate and for glyphosate formulations. To reach these conclusions, IARC reviewed about 1000 studies. Some of the studies looked at people exposed through their jobs, such as farmers. Others were experimental studies on cancer and cancer related effects in experimental systems.

Treatment of glyphosate toxicity should be centered on determining the route of introduction and avoiding future exposure. Eating non-GMO (genetically modified organism) foods and drinking reverse osmosis water are two of the best ways to avoid glyphosate.

The ordering process for MosaicDX tests starts with your healthcare practitioner assessing your symptoms and recommending the most appropriate test.

Once a test has been recommended, collection kits can be conveniently ordered and delivered straight to your doorstep. If you already have a collection kit, you can register your test and begin the process at your convenience.

It is important to carefully follow the collection instructions and include all required information about yourself and your specimens when registering your test. When your specimens are collected, you can use the prepaid shipping materials provided in your kit to ship them to MosaicDX. Your results will be accessible online via the MosaicDX portal. We recommend scheduling an appointment with your healthcare practitioner to discuss your results and develop a plan for your healthcare

If you are located outside of the U.S., our customer service team can assist you in finding a distributor in your country. In countries where a distributor is not required, you can place an order through our international patient ordering site. Please note that all international shipping costs must be paid prior to shipping the kit.

Glyphosate is a standalone test or an optional add-on to other urine tests such as the GPL-TOXMycoTOX, and Organic Acids Test.

The primary focus of treatment for glyphosate toxicity should be to identify the source of exposure and take steps to prevent future exposure.

Two effective ways to avoid glyphosate exposure include consuming non-GMO foods and drinking reverse osmosis water. A recent study found that individuals who consume organic foods have significantly lower levels of glyphosate in their urine. Humic acids have also been shown to be a safe way to adsorb glyphosate in the GI tract

Yes, it is possible to conduct multiple urine tests using a single urine sample, provided that the volume requirement for each test is met. The urine collection container typically holds around 50 mL of urine. However, for timed and 24-hour urine tests, a specialized collection jug or bag is necessary. 

Different states have regulations that define the scope of practice for practitioners. It is the practitioner’s responsibility to abide by these rules. Check with your state board of health to determine any restrictions related to laboratory testing. Please note, Mosaic Diagnostics does not offer testing in New York.

To ensure optimal results, it is recommended to ship urine specimens to the laboratory immediately after collection as they start degrading in quality soon after. In case immediate shipping is not possible, here are some guidelines for specimen stability: Urine samples can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, and for extended periods in the freezer. This applies to all urine tests performed at MosaicDX, except for the Kryptopyrrole test, for which urine must be frozen immediately and received within 24 hours of collection for accurate results.
