Understanding Seizure Disorders
According to the Epilepsy Foundation, seizures (also known as epilepsy), are characterized by episodes of uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain, which is caused by complex chemical changes that occur in nerve cells. Seizures are not a disease, but rather a symptom of many different disorders that can affect the brain. Seizure disorders are more likely to develop in patients who have other neurological disorders, psychiatric conditions, or immune system problems. In some cases, uncontrolled seizures can cause permanent mental and physical impairment. Some seizure disorders are hereditary, but others are caused by genetics, metabolic imbalances, or environmental hazards, such as lead poisoning.
